February 1, 2001 - 0:0
VIENNA, United Nations The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a set of stamps depicting endangered species of fauna. These are the ninth set of stamps in UNPA's multi-year series endangered species, which was first issued in 1993 to highlight the need for the protection of endangered species throughout the world. The United Nations stamps provide information about the aims and activities of the world organization such as peace, health, world heritage, environment, refugees, children and human rights. UNPA commemorative stamps are issued six to seven times a year in recognition of the work or activities of the United Nations or one of its specialized agencies. In this year's series the 12 different endangered species will appear on three sheets each with four illustrated animals. The 12 stamps, in denominations of 34 cents or seven Austrian schillings, each measure 39.2mm horizontally in 28.6mm vertically, perforation to perforation. Among these animals are galapagos giant tortoise, North American lynx and Laysan duck. It is worth mentioning parallel to UN's stamp event, Austrian post also printed a stamp illustrating "stockenten", worth seven Austrian schillings as a piece in the series named "hunting and the environment".
