Central Bank Chief Complains His Upcoming Resignation Was Leaked
"I think that today someone leaked my resignation," AFP quoted Mario Blejer, a 21-year International Monetary Fund veteran who started his current post in January, as saying. "Someone wanted me to go before my time." But Blejer conceded that "really nothing new has happened. I don't blame anyone in particular, but I got tired, that's all," he added.
"We were working well with (the Ministry of) Economy in a monetary plan that I believe is viable and I think that in two or three weeks there could be an agreement with the IMF." A government source said Friday that Blejer's resignation was due to policy disagreements with Economy Minister Roberto Lavagna as Argentina struggles through a massive economic crisis.
Blejer favors a forced tradeoff of new public debt bonds for account holders' savings withheld since December.
Lavagna, meanwhile, persuaded President Eduardo Duhalde to offer a voluntary plan to help alleviate some of the dire effects of the measure, amid a dramatic four-year recession.
