PUSAN, South Korea -- Mahmoud Miran of Iran took a silver medal as he lost to Yasuyuki Muneta of Nippon in the +100kg judo final here Monday.

In -100kg category, the Iranian judoka Abbas Fallah and his Kazakh opponent tied at No. 3, bagging bronze.

Japan's men's team powered to two gold medals on the first day of judo action at the Asian Games Monday, fighting off tough challenges from archrivals South Korea and emerging force Iran.

Muneta overcame an awesome height disadvantage to beat world bronze medalist Miran in the heavyweight final and light heavyweight Keiji Suzuki whipped hometown hero Jang Sung-hoo by a 2-1 decision.

But Asian champion Jo Su-hee gave the home crowd something to cheer about by overwhelming Japan's Mizuho Matsuzaki by a huge point margin in the women's 78 kilogram and under light heavyweight final.

Atlanta Olympic champion Sun Fuming, 28, turned back the clock to beat up-and-coming South Korean Choi Sook-ie in the over-78 kilogram heavyweight final to underscore China's supremacy in the women's game, AFP reported.

The men's over-100 kilogram heavyweight bronze medals went to South Korea's Kang Byung-jin and Vyacheslav Berduta of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's Askhat Zhitkeyev won the bronze by fighting back in the consolation round.

The women's heavyweight bronze medals went to Mongolia's Erdene Ochir Dolgormaa and Thailand's Paradawade Pestonyee.

The light heavyweight bronze medals were won by China's Pan Yuqing and Nasiba Salayeva of Turkmenistan.
