Interest Group Unveils TV Ad Slamming U.S. Senate's "Franco-Republicans"
The Club for Growth, which describes itself as a "free-market political advocacy organization," planned to debut its new ad campaign targeting senators George Voinovich of Ohio and Olympia Snowe of Maine for their votes to reduce the Bush tax cut, AFP reported.
"Senators Voinovich and Snowe have single-handedly thwarted the Central piece of President Bush's economic stimulus package," said Club for Growth President Stephen Moore, in a statement. "President Bush has won significant military victories in Iraq with the help of strong, dependable allies. Why are his so-called allies in the senate so eager to impede economic progress?"
The ads are scheduled to begin airing Saturday in three cities in the senators' home states: Portland Maine, Bangor, Maine and Columbus, Ohio.
The voiceover on the ad says: "President Bush courageously led the forces of freedom. But some so-called `allies' like France stood in the way.
"At home, President Bush has proposed bold job-cutting tax-cuts to boost our economy. But so-called Republicans like George Voinovich stand in the way.
"America need strong allies abroad. And President Bush needs strong supporters in the senate.
"Hey, George Voinovich. Join president Bush's fight to cut taxes and fix the economy," concludes the Voinovich ad, which is similar to one that targets Snowe.
The images in the television spot depict French President Jacques Chirac next to a waving French flag, with the legend "stood in the way" on the television screen.
The ad then cuts to a photo of Voinovich with a French flag waving beside him. "George Voinovich stands in the way," the legend on the screen reads.
Last week, the senate passed a 2.2 trillion-dollar budget blueprint that limited the size of any new tax cut to 350 billion dollars -- thanks to the defection by Voinovich and Snowe.
The vote was a setback for the White House, which had asked Congress to approve a 726 billion-dollar tax cut over 10 years.
