TEHRAN -- Head of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Affairs Mohsen Mirdamadi said here Saturday that Iran is determined to expand ties with European countries.

In a meeting with Speaker of Norway's parliament Yurgen Kosmo, currently here on a four-day visit, Mirdamadi stressed that Iran follows the policy of detente and constructive dialogue with the European countries, IRNA reported.

Mirdamadi termed exchange of political and parliamentary delegations between the two countries as "very effective" in promotion of relations and removal of possible ambiguities and called for further expansion of ties in all fields.

Pointing to critical situation in the Middle East region, Afghanistan and Iraq, he said cooperation of all Iraq's neighboring states in the country's reconstruction under the supervision of the United Nations is the only way to maintain peace and stability in the region.

"We think that a broad-based popular government in Iraq like that in Afghanistan can be effective in the settlement of the Iraqi crisis," he said. Mirdamadi pointed to the three terrorist attacks in Iraq in the past 20 days and said, "Existence of a foreign government in Iraq would not help solve the problems but the contrary would complicate the situation more."

"Iran reserves the right to scientific and peaceful use of nuclear energy and is ready to have extensive and clear cooperation with European states which possess nuclear technology in all its projects in order to remove concerns of other countries," he added.

Kosmo, for his part, expressed satisfaction over effective talks with Iranian officials and hoped bilateral political, economic and parliamentary ties would receive further boost by making use of the two countries' current potentials.

He lauded Iran's culture, civilization and position in the Middle East region and called for the country's active contribution to settling the Middle East issues and constructing Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Norwegian speaker appreciated Iran's hosting of Iraqi and Afghan refugees and termed Tehran's role in maintenance of regional peace and stability as "unique".

He hoped Norway would help Iran expand its ties with the European countries.
