Iran, Netherlands Keen on Joint Water Project

MAHABAD, West Azarbaijan Province (IRNA) -- Advisor to the Director General of West Azarbaijan Regional Water Company, Jalaleddin Torabi, here on Tuesday, announced that a research project on integrated management of Orumiyeh Lake water resources is due to be launched jointly by Iran and Netherlands.

He told IRNA that preliminary measures on the project to be implemented jointly by West Azarbaijan province Regional Water Co. on behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture have been taken.

"All environmental issues, exploitation of water resources, the situation of Orumiyeh Lake and the marshland surrounding it, which end up flowing into it, will be examined," he added.

He added that several experts from the provincial departments of Agricultural Jihad and Environmental Protection will participate in the jointly-invested project.

"A Dutch delegation headed by Netherlands deputy minister of agriculture and several agricultural experts in a recent visit to Iran toured the environs of Orumiyeh Lake including Kani Barazan marshes in Mahabad, Hassanlou dam, Mahabad plain irrigation network and Shahid Kalantari road," he added.

According to him, once the project is completed, comprehensive information will be available on implementation of various scientific, research, economic, environmental and agricultural projects.

Orumiyeh Lake coastline measuring 51,440 square meters includes water flowing into it through 21 permanent and seasonal rivers from across the West and East Azarbaijan provinces.

The lake is one of the 59 international natural reserve areas on the globe which have been registered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The majority of 19 marshlands across the province are located in the environs of Orumiyeh Lake. Hassanlou, Dargeh Sangi, Yadegarlou, Qupi-Baba-Ali marshes are among the internationally registered bodies of water which are located in the province.
