Bayern goal spree in Donaueschingen

MUNICH (fcbayern.de) -- Four weeks ahead of the start of the new Bundesliga campaign, Bayern Munich showed that they are still in a goal-getting mood.

In the absence of many World Cup stars, the reigning German champions won their second preseason friendly against the South Baden amateurs of FV Donaueschingen on Thursday evening with an 8-0 score line.

In front of a capacity crowd of 5,000 in the Anton-Mall Stadium in Donaueschingen, Bayern Munich showed little sign of their strenuous training regime from the previous days. Despite somewhat tired legs, Magath’s eleven, which included the first two players to return from World Cup duty – Roque Santa Cruz and Julio dos Santos – seized the initiative right from kickoff and displayed passion and fervor. Double whammy before the break

However, it took 18 minutes for the Reds to take the lead. After a neat combination covering half the pitch, Roy Makaay opened the scoring. Ten minutes later Santa Cruz slotted in to make it 2-0. Then, just before halftime a double whammy from Makaay and Scholl, who scored with a beautiful free kick from 20 yards, doubled the score to 4-0.

The second half saw Magath introduce four new players, but this had no effect on the goal-hungry mood of the team.

Quite the opposite, Santa Cruz netted just four minutes after the restart to make it 5-0 before the Stefan Maierhofer show began. The reserve team striker notched up a thrilling hat-trick, including a last minute goal, to bring the final score to 8-0. Magath happy with his team

“I think the fans got to see a good game. It was our aim to score a few goals and that was what we did”, said a happy Felix Magath after the full time whistle.
