TEHRAN -- The political relations between Iran and Iraq hold a promising prospect, Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki said here on Tuesday.

“The security issue in Iraq is the most important topic and we believe that the causes of Iraq’s insecurity are rooted in domestic, regional, and extra-regional parameters,” Mottaki told the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

Expansion of relations in all areas, insecurity issue, presence of the occupiers in Iraq, as well as improvement of trade cooperation were also discussed in the meeting.

Iran can widely cooperate with Iraq especially in the fields of energy, pipelines, and electric power plants, he said.

“Iraq’s different religious and ethnic groups have co-existed brotherly and peacefully for centuries, but a suspicious current is fomenting ethnic conflicts to fan the flames of strife in the country,” Mottaki said.

Talabani emphasized the necessity for strengthening ties between Baghdad and Tehran in all areas.
