Uranium enrichment vital: envoy

Iran’s Ambassador to Bahrain Hossein Amir Abdollahian has said that the uranium enrichment program is crucial to Iran for peaceful aims.

“We are open to serious negotiations to produce tangible results. You have to understand our uranium enrichment program is vital because of the demands of our economy. As a country of 70 million, this question of nuclear energy is vital for scientific purposes. Our assertion that this program is not meant for military purposes has not found support amongst Western countries because they would like to keep this technology to themselves,” he said in an interview with Bahrain Tribune.
In response to a question about Iran’s relations with the PGCC countries and Saudi Arabia in particular, the diplomat stated that Tehran has no problem with Riyadh, saying, “There is understanding on a broad range of issues amongst us but the media plays up issues especially when it comes to our nuclear program.”
“We have signed security agreements with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. We are unanimous in the understanding that our actions can have an effect on the situation in the region,” he noted.
The envoy insisted that Iran’s support for Hezbollah is purely moral and there is nothing beyond that, noting Tehran supported the Doha declaration, which emphasized a peaceful resolution of the problems in Lebanon.
On Iran’s ties with Bahrain, Abdollahian said that despite certain irritations of the past, bilateral relations have been on the upswing in the past six months.
“Both parties agreed that caution ought to be exercised by the media when reporting such issues. All this was in the past and there is much to be done. I am presently engaged in organizing a meeting of the joint high commission in Tehran. This should result in more tie-ups in various fields,” the Iranian envoy added.
“Iran has normal relations with all countries in the region except Israel,” he said while pointing to Iran’s ties with Syria.
The ambassador emphasized the fact that as a responsible member of the international community, Iran is aware of its regional and international responsibilities.
