TEHRAN – The Head of the UN nuclear watchdog’s Safeguards Department, Olli Heinonen, held technical nuclear talks with Iran’s nuclear officials.
Heinonen arrived in Tehran on Sunday night at the invitation of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). An expert from the agency’s Safeguards Department is accompanying Heinonen. The visit takes place in line with Iran’s normal cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency over its efforts to use nuclear technology for peaceful uses.
Heinonen finished his first round of talks with AEOI Deputy Director Mohammad Saeedi and Ali-Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The talks will continue on Tuesday.
The talks follow Heinonen’s talks in Tehran on August 7 and 8. Saeedi and Soltanieh described negotiations with Heinonen as ‘constructive’ at the time.
The talks are held ahead of the Board of Governors’ meeting in mid-September when IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will put forward his latest report on Iran’s nuclear activities
