TEHRAN -- A Scania trailer rear-ended a passenger bus on Karaj-Qazvin highway on Monday killing 14 people and injuring 31 others.

The incident happened at 06:00 a.m. local time near the Karaj toll station, police announced.
The injured were whisked to hospitals in Tehran and Karaj.
Of the fatalities 9 passengers died upon impact immediately and the others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital.
A number of the injured are in critical condition.
The passenger bus was moving from Baneh, a city in northwestern Kurdistan Province, to Tehran.
Mohsen Beigi, the national traffic police commander, has blamed the trailer driver for lack of control over the vehicle and the vehicle's old age for the tragic incident.
However, Parviz Sayah-Alborzi, deputy head of state Traffic Police cited the trailer’s driver sleepiness as the cause of the accident.
Careless driving is the major cause of accidents in Iran. Unfortunately, police is not tough enough on careless motorists.
