TEHRAN - Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior foreign policy adviser to the Supreme Leader, said on Saturday that Iran will spare no effort to support Syria as an “ally” militarily and politically.

Velayati also said that Iran will “actively” attend the next conference on Syria in Vienna by observing its red lines.

It is acknowledged that no solution can be found to the Syrian crisis without Iran’s help, the veteran politician noted.

He also said that no country has the right to meddle in Syria’s internal affairs, reiterating Tehran’s position that it is the Syrian people who should determine their country’s destiny.

“Terrorists and extremists are avowed enemy of the Syrian people and so far, thousands of the country’s people have been killed because of the terrorists’ actions which are supported by the West, especially the U.S., the Zionists and reactionary countries in the region,” he remarked.

Velayati, a former foreign minister who is the current chairman of the Expediency Council strategic research center, also said that the Syrian government has the right to defend the citizens’ rights and predicted that Bashar al-Asaad will win if an election is held in the country.

Elsewhere, he said that Iran will accept no solution to the Syrian crisis which is not welcomed by the country’s people.

Velayati also said that providing support for the Islamic countries is the basis of Iran’s foreign policy.
