Iran, Russia set to start naval drills in the Sea of Oman
TEHRAN – Iran and Russia will begin a joint naval drill in the northern Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman on Thursday.
Iranian admiral Hassan Maghsadlou, the drill spokesman, said the chief purpose behind the military exercise is to promote security and marine cooperation in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean.
Improving marine cooperation and strengthening ties between the navies of Iran and the Russian Federation are among other aims of the joint drill, Maghsadlou stated.
He added that establishing coordination in the face of threats to marine security and safety, especially protecting oil tankers and commercial ships, and fighting marine terrorism, are among other objectives of the maneuver.
“This exercise is also intended to deepen friendly ties, expand regional cooperation, especially among neighbors, and promote the role of regional countries in establishing marine security and navigation,” the drill spokesman pointed out.
