Experts: Women Trying to Improve Their Social Status in Qom Province

TEHRAN Experts of social affairs believe that attaining one-third of the seats in Qom City Council and the nomination of a woman in the Experts Assembly by-election indicate that women in Qom Province are trying to improve their social status.

The main activities of women in Qom were previously limited to educational and health centers, however, with establishment of different departments in this city, women have been employed by them.

The active presence of women employees in different departments in Qom Province has led to a new view on women's status in Qom.

Dr. Jalali, a woman physician, said that from childhood girls in Qom Province are now trained in a way completely different from the past.

She said that the society's views on women are changing and that such change requires the active presence of women in all social fields.

Jalali underlined that women are gradually realizing that they should upgrade their status in society and in the family and show their potential.

According to an IRNA report, Maryam al-Sadat Mohaqeq, a lawyer in Qom Province, said that the Islamic Revolution upgraded women's cultural level and made them aware of domestic and foreign developments, adding that it helped women to realize that they should upgrade their status.

She added that increasing the number of women experts in different scientific and technical fields, their presence on the scientific boards of universities and their nomination in Majlis, city council and Experts Assembly elections are signs of development.

Mohaqeq noted that the establishment of women's nongovernmental organizations, providing women with consultation facilities in the Family Complex and appointing women lawyers for them are all indications of the improvement of women's status in Qom Province.

Moreover, the Secretary of the Commission for Women's Affairs of the Qom Governor's Office, Fatemeh Abbasqolizadeh, emphasized that Qom Province has taken remarkable steps in improving the status of women in recent years.

She said that the future is very bright for Iranian women, adding that this is due to President Khatami and his government's considerable attention to women's issues.
