Addiction & Its Treatment

TEHRAN About 40,000 people become addicted to drugs every year in this country.

Nowadays, wherever you go you see addicted youth. The darkness of this thing has made their lives dark and hopeless.

Every social phenomenon, good or bad, brings with itself some jobs. Addiction has created jobs for thousands of drug dealers and smugglers.

The newspapers and other mass media advertise different methods to cure addiction, but experts say that none of these ways is perfect and sufficient to cure an addict, and so this makes them more discouraged about finding release.

Now the question is: Why don't officials try to help addicts find the best way possible to cure themselves? One official said, "If we are able to help even five percent of the addicted people, that will be a big success."

It should be noted that in various countries, because of the importance they place on this issue, institutions have been established to help addicts give up drugs in a scientific way, and they help them all year long and with many facilities, but unfortunately, in Iran there is no such scientific institution.

Most of the addicts say that their lack of self-confidence is the reason that they relapse into addiction after having quit drugs for a time. So they need supporters to help them.

Dr. Neek-Akhtar, the head of Hejrat Treatment Gathering Circle in Tehran, says that the main objective of this gathering is to change the addict's attitude and behavior. He said, "To conceal their weakness, addicts try to do unexpected things, so we try to remove their ignorance by holding group meetings. Afterward, we detoxify them, which involves five percent of the treatment. In this center we carry out research as well as treatment, although there has been no research in this field in the country so far."

According to Dr. Neek-Akhtar, when addicts commit themselves to the center, they are treated with a program which lasts for one year.

He added, "In this center, an addict will be treated all day long for three months, and they are closely monitored for six months after they quit drugs. It must be mentioned that for the first three months after they commit themselves they are not allowed to go outside."

Dr. Neek-Akhtar said, "It is not right to think that an addict is cured when he stops using opium. If we are able to reduce the period of addiction, it will be a success since it reduces economic damage and also returns peace to the family."
