NEW DELHI - Police investigating the murder of India's "Bandit Queen" Phoolan Devi, arrested three more people on Friday for their alleged role in the case, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

According to AFP, this takes the number of arrests made in the case to seven.

One of those arrested Friday included an activist of the Samajwadi Party to which Devi belonged, the PTI report said.

The activist had allegedly hidden two revolvers used to kill Devi, in her garage after the murder, the report added.

Devi was shot outside her official MP's residence by up to three gunmen on July 25, just after she returned from a session of Parliament.

A week ago, the police arrested Sher Singh Rana and said he had confessed to shooting Devi at point blank range to avenge the massacre of 22 high-caste Hindus -- allegedly by Devi's outlaw gang -- on Valentine's Day in 1981.

The other two people arrested on Friday were suspected of supplying arms to Rana for killing devi, the PTI report said.

Meanwhile, a report in the ***Pioneer*** newspaper Friday quoted an unidentified Delhi police official as saying Devi's murder could be linked to her campaign against the Liquor Mafia in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Devi, elected to Parliament for the first time in 1996, was part of India's bandit folklore, with her life on the run in the rugged ravines of the central state of Madhya Pradesh in the early 1980s the subject of numerous films and books.
