CAIRO Nearly 600 students, professors and administrators marched Monday at Minya University Campus in southern Egypt to protest Israel's military offensive against the Palestinians, police said.

The university's Vice President Abdel Moneim Bassiuni, as well as several deans and professors took part in the peaceful protests against Israeli military actions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, they said.

Islamist students circulated a newsletter opposing Arab peace initiatives with Israel, including one offered in February by Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz of Saudi Arabia.

The Islamists urged "Arab leaders to close the file of initiatives which do not offer a decisive settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," according to a copy of the newsletter obtained by AFP.

More than 1,500 Egyptian students demonstrated Sunday against Israel in a northern Egyptian university, police and organizers said.

Anti-Israeli demonstrations have taken place on Egyptian campuses on an almost daily basis for more than a week, following massive Israeli military incursions into the Palestinian territories.
