Iran Wins West Asian Epee Silver, Fencing Crown

KUWAIT Iran snatched silver of the epee competition and lifted the title of fencing of the 2nd West Asian Games Sunday.

In a nail-biting clash against Kuwaiti fencers, the Iranian side comprising Farhad Rezaei, Mohammad Rezaei and Siamak Feiz-Asgari was beaten 45-44 in the epee class.

In the normal time, the two teams fought to a 44-44 tie but Hamd al-Awazi of Kuwait clashing against Iranian fencer Farhad Rezaei took one determining point in the extra time, helping his side won the crown.

Earlier national saber team of Iran stood top.

In Saturday's saber final, Iranian fencers Hadi Mohammadzadeh, Mojtaba Abedini, Reza Khaleqi and Peyman Fakhri clashed, helping their side grab the top title.

The host team, Kuwait, finished runner-up and the Jordanian team stood third in saber competitions.

In foil category, the Iranian team comprising Javad Rezaei, Mohammad Mir-Mohammadi, Keyvan Javanshir and Sirous Feiz-Asgari ranked second and snatched the silver medal of the West Asian Games.

Kuwait managed to take the title and Jordan finished third, IRNA reported.

Totally, Iran ranked first in the fencing contests of the 2nd West Asian Games including saber, foil and epee, winning three golds, three silvers and four bronzes.

Kuwait finished runner-up with three golds, three silvers and two bronzes and the third title was taken by the Jordanian team, bagging three bronzes.
