TEHRAN -- With participation of 7 provinces, and also with the aim of promoting tourist attractions in Gorgan, Region One Eco-Tourism and Tourism Festival was held on Wednesday, October 30, in the city of Gorgan. Director General for International Affairs Department of Iran Touring and Tourism Organization (ITTO) said, "Despite being the 9th favorite tourism destination in the world, Iran's tourism revenues are still very little." Morteza Tale' Massouleh added, "From U.S.$500bn tourism revenues in the world, only U.S.$1bn is Iran's share which is an unacceptable figure and worrying at the same time."

He said that tourism industry is outrunning all other sectors showing its importance in the world economy. Iran has 14 regions and numerous historical, religious, natural, and tourism attractions. As estimated by the experts, Iran's revenue should be at least U.S. $12b per year.

He added, "Such figure is equal to the revenues from oil export products per year but unlike the oil industry it requires less investment.

Development of tourism industry is one of the primary ways to resolve economical problems. The only way to improve the sector is through cooperation of all officials involved. "Serious attention to the sector should also be accompanied by courtesy and the culture of hospitality among people and governmental officials. Identifying tourist markets, deployment of all sectors in supporting tourism industry, as well as serious support by the private sector, are the best ways for developing tourism in Iran."

Governor General of Golestan, Mohammad-Hashem Mahimani, added, "Tourism is an international necessity. With 4 regions, Golestan Province is an important spot for tourists. Such advantage should be used carefully and accordingly. Creating a proper atmosphere of hospitality for tourists, identifying tourist spots, increasing the staying time of the pilgrims to Imam Reza (AS) holy shrine, as well as reconciliation of people with tourist destinations are among the most important elements in the development of this sector in the region.

Region One Eco-Tourism and Tourism Festival ended on November 5, in Gorgan.
