Official Revises Toll From Iran Prison Fire

TEHRAN -- An Iranian official here Tuesday revised toll from the early Monday morning fire in a prison in the northeastern city of Gorgan, which killed 27 cellmates, saying only nine people and not 50 were injured in the incident.

"Among the nine injured, five were provided with outpatient treatment and four others are still in hospital, whose general condition is satisfactory," the Public Relations Office of the State Prisons Organization Head Mirza Aqaei said.

Provincial Prisons Head, Abbas-Ali Arab, said the fire was caused by a short circuit which broke out at 03::20 Monday morning -- 2350 GM Sunday.

He also announced the names of the victims, all men and aged between 20 and 69, who were convicted by local courts on various charges, including theft, drug trafficking and robbery.

Another official in the province said the fire had also left "heavy property loss", reported IRNA Aqaei said an investigation team had been dispatched from Tehran to verify the cause of the fire and that their findings will be announced accordingly.
