A specific body must be assigned to address Tehran’s traffic problem: mayor

TEHRAN – The main cause of Tehran’s traffic congestion is the fact that there is no single management system, Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said here on Wednesday.

It is not clear which organization should solve the traffic problem of the megalopolis, he told Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

“First it must be determined who is responsible for resolving the problem,” he added.

By assigning a specific body to address the problem, some possible solutions could be put forward, such as the development of the mass transportation system and efforts to encourage citizens to change their habits, the mayor argued.

The executive branch of government cannot handle the problem by itself, so the judicial and legislative branches should provide a helping hand, he noted.

“I have some proposals for Tehran’s traffic problem, but first it must be determined who or which organization is responsible for solving the problem, and then we will present our solutions,” he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Qalibaf stated that the city has many problems with regard to its hotels and recreational and commercial centers.

He also repeated his earlier call, saying that all Iranian and foreign investors are welcome to participate in projects in Tehran.
