TEHRAN -- According to international law and logic, Iran should not be censured by the UN Security Council, the chairman of the International Relations Department of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said in Mashhad on Tuesday.

Such an act would kill the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Mohammad Lajevardi told the Mehr News Agency.

There will be serious global repercussions and international treaties will be discredited if a UN resolution against Iran, which is an NPT signatory that has allowed 2000 man-hours of inspections of its nuclear installations, is issued which declares the Islamic Republic a threat to international security, he observed.

On the possibility of Russia or China vetoing a UN Security Council resolution against Iran, Lajevardi said that all countries pursue their national interests, and, of course, China obtains a considerable amount of its energy needs from the Persian Gulf region and Russia has extensive trade ties with Iran.

He also expressed hope that logic would rule the day in international relations.

In conclusion, Lajevardi said that any halt in Iranian oil exports would damage the global economy.
