Jury members for Fajr intl. section named

TEHRAN -- An Iranian and four foreign jury members will judge the entries of the International Films Section of the 25th Fajr International Film Festival to be held here from Feb. 1 to 11.

Iranian Oscar-nominated director Majid Majidi along with director-cum-producer Wouter Barendrecht from the Netherlands, filmmaker Tofiq Ismayilov from the Republic of Azerbaijan, screenwriter-director Tsitsi Dangarembga from Zimbabwe, and actress Bijaya Jena from India will examine the representatives of the world cinema at the event.

Majidi’s “Children of Heaven” received Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 1997.

Barendrecht, the producer of various works, including “Bear’s Kiss”, “The Era of Vampire”, “Invisible Waves”, and “The Home Songs Stories”, was previously the jury member at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2005.

Dangarembga is the author of the famous novel “Nervous Conditions”, a partially autobiographical work which appeared in Britain in 1988 and the next year in the United States.

Jena won the State Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film “Jaga Balia”. Furthermore, she was on the Governing Council of the Film and TV Institute of India from 1992 to 1995 and on the National Feature Film Awards Jury in 1993.

In addition, Seven Iranian experts and veterans of Iranian cinema will judge the feature-length domestic contenders at the festival.

Shahriar Bahrani, Mohammad Davudi, Javad Tusi, Abdolmajid Qadirian, Mohammad-Ali Najafi, Ali Nasirian, and Mohammadreza Honarmand will be the jury members of Iranian Films Section of the event.

The Iranian old hand of stage and screen Nasirian, the Eternal Figure for dramatic arts in 2006 in his homeland, is also to be venerated at this year’s festival. The prolific actor appeared in various types of films, including “The Cow”, “The Postman”, “The Custodian”, “The Cycle”, “Stone Lion”, “Frosty Roads”, “Captain Khorshid”, “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, and “Iron Island”.

Director Honarmand previously served as the jury members of 19th edition of the festival.

Najafi has so many popular works in his directorial career most memorably of which is the TV series “Sarbedaran”.

The makeup artist and stage designer Qadirian previously won a Crystal Simorgh (the most prestigious Iranian cinematic award) of the festival for best stage design for Bahrani’s “The Saint Mary” in 2000.

Tusi is currently the director of Iran’s Critics and Cinematic Writers Society while Davudi is busy with wide range of cinematic activities.
