Dozens trapped after bridge collapses on Indian train
"Dismantling was going on of a 140-year-old bridge at Bhagalpur station. The third arch fell on the coach," Samir Goswami, spokesman for India's Eastern Railways, told AFP from the train's originating city Kolkata.
"So far we have no information about any injuries," he said.
Goswami said the reservation chart showed no bookings for the carriage, but Indian news channels estimated 150 passengers were inside when the early morning accident occurred.
Many were sleeping, the reports said.
Approximately 20 people had been rescued and taken to a local hospital with injuries, the channels said, adding other passengers remained trapped.
India's junior minister for railways told NDTV news channel rescue efforts were underway but had no figures on the number of people inside the coach.
"Our people are trying to extricate them," said R. Velu.
The interstate train heading east had crossed into the Indian state of Bihar en route to Jampalpur town when the accident occurred at Bhagalpur, 1,240 kilometers (775 miles) from the Indian capital New Delhi.
