Lucky Spokane children get early Christmas present
About 100 Spokane children went on a clothes chopping spree at Northtown Mall.
Clothe A Child happens once a year and is put on by the Salvation Army, JC Penney and community members.
Children are given $100 shopping sprees so that they can buy clothing that their families would not normally be able to afford for them.
Children are paired with a community volunteer, who help the kids pick out the clothes that they need. The kids have a list of items that they want to get and then they have two hours to get all of their shopping done.
One girl, 5-year-old Jane Heffernan, was paired up with community member Joyce Colclough. “We’re buying a coat, boots, shoes, pants,” said Colclough. “The most for the money, but it’s something that she likes.” Another girl, Marissa Nesta, was glad to be there, “I’m so excited,” said Nesta. “As soon as my mom found out that me and my little sister, she is doing it to, we started jumping up and screaming.”
This is the eighth year that the Salvation Army has paired up with JC Penney for the Clothe A Child event.
Once a child has participated, they are not eligible to do it again. That way, different children will be able to benefit form this shopping spree next year.
There are two groups of kids for this event and once the second group is finished shopping, all of the participants will attend a party hosted by the Upper Columbia Academy High School students.
