TEHRAN – UN Resolution 1737 is more harmful to regional and international security than to Tehran’s national interests because Iran is in the heart of the region and in direct contact with its five security points, which are of great importance to the interests of the East and the West, security expert Alireza Akbari said here on Sunday.

The resolution is not intended to resolve the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program but is designed to heighten tension and spark a crisis, Akbari, who is the director of Iran’s Tasmim Strategic Research Center, told reporters at a press conference.

The UN Security Council voted to impose sanctions on Iran’s trade in nuclear materials and technology on December 23. Asked about the view of those who believe that Iran should secure its right to uranium enrichment in the future, even if it is forced to suspend these activities for a few years, he said, “Currently there are two viewpoints in the country.

According to one, it is enough if the West recognizes Iran’s right to enrichment and we should suspend our activities for the time being. According to the other view, suspension would deprive us of our rights.”

There is no problem with diversity of ideas, but in sensitive times, the country’s actions should safeguard national security, he added.
