Point for Bruce on Wigan return

WIGAN, England (AFP) -- Steve Bruce got his second spell at Wigan off to a reasonable start with a point against high-flying Manchester City at the JJB Stadium on yesterday.
Bruce was appointed to his second spell in charge of Wigan a week ago taking over from the sacked Chris Hutchings after a compensation agreement had been agreed with his previous club, Birmingham. But his new tenure got off to a nightmare start when Deiberson Geovanni put Manchester City ahead inside 30 seconds.
That came thanks to a shocking blunder from defender Titus Bramble who made a mess of collecting Paul Scharner's harmless back header. Instead he nudged it into the path of Geovanni who calmly waltzed around Chris Kirkland to find the net.
The Latics steadied the ship though and in an evenly-fought contest they were back on level terms after 25 minutes, Paul Scharner rising to head home at the far post from a Jason Koumas cross.
Another poor Bramble clearance had Wigan in trouble again, but on this occasion he managed to recover possession by himself as City threatened once again.
And Wigan nearly went ahead just before halftime when Emile Heskey, who previously played for Bruce at Birmingham, flicked on for Koumas to curl a 20-yarder narrowly over the bar.
The visitors again made a storming start to the second half and Stephen Ireland had a goal-bound shot blocked before the City strike-force was depleted when Heskey was forced off with a hamstring injury.
Andreas Isaksson in the City goal then made a tremendous save from a left-foot volley from substitute Ryan Taylor after good work from defender Mario Melchiot had set up a half chance.
But the veteran Dutch player turned from hero to villain with three minutes to go when he was sent off for a crude tackle on Ireland.
Wigan though held on to give Bruce a promising start even though they are still mired in the three-team relegation zone.
Sven Goran Eriksson's side failure to win meant they missed out on rising to second in the Premier league behind Arsenal and ahead of city rivals Manchester United who play today.
