A Commerce Department official in Khorassan Razavi Province Tuesday said that Iran will soon start exporting saffron to the Japanese market.
Three trade delegations will be dispatched to Japan to coordinate the export of Iranian saffron to that country, Manuchehr Soltani, responsible for foreign trade in the Commerce Department of Iran's northeastern province of Khorassan Razavi, said. The Japanese market has the capacity to absorb 300 tons of saffron a year, he said.
A conference will be held in Mashhad before the end of the current Iranian year with the participation of a Japanese delegation to finalize the arrangements for the export of Iranian Saffron to that country, Soltani added.
Saffron comes from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus. It takes 75,000 blossoms or 225,000 handpicked stigmas to make a single pound of saffron, which explains why it is the world's most expensive spice.
