TEHRAN -- Iranian artist Mojtaba Karami is transcribing the Holy Quran in Latin calligraphy style. When the work is finished it will be the first time such a feat has been accomplished in the world.

Karami began learning Latin calligraphy with master Hamidreza Ebrahimi in 1999 in Shiraz. He continued perfecting his skill and finally received a certificate from the London based Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society (CLAS).
Karami was encouraged to transcribe the translation of the Holy Quran into English calligraphy by Persian scholar Ali Quli Qarai two years ago when they met at the 13th Tehran International Quran Exhibition.
After conducting research, the project began with work on the 30th part of the Quran with the cooperation of illuminator Hashem Mazaheri, compiler Fatemeh Karami and graphic designer Mohammad-Sadeq Tehrani. The 30th section was finished and went on display at the 14th Quran exhibit.
The Latin calligraphy style of the Holy Quran used in this project contains two types of handwriting styles -- gothic and copperplate, and it is estimated that the work will take three years to complete.
