ElBaradei: We can not inspect intentions

BERLIN (AP) -- The UN nuclear watchdog's director urged Iran on Thursday to resume negotiations over its nuclear program with the UN Security Council’s permanent members and Germany.

Mohammed ElBaradei, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told reporters that Iran had to take steps to reassure the international community that its intentions for its nuclear program were solely peaceful.
ElBaradei urged all involved parties to re-enter into negotiations to ensure future stability in the region.
“We can inspect the past and the present, we cannot inspect the future. We can not inspect intentions,” ElBaradei said in Berlin, where he was attending a conference on nonproliferation.
Last week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that his nation was installing 6,000 new uranium-enriching centrifuges and testing a version of the device that works five times faster.
“I call on Iran not to speed up the process because we need first to have an agreement with the international community ... before Iran moves forward,” ElBaradei said. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that following a January meeting of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China - the six countries that have led efforts to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions - Tehran had increased cooperation with ElBaradei's organization but continued to shun negotiations.
