Marjan Kalhor finished 60th in the two-run women’s giant slalom clocking 3 minutes, 05.39 seconds on Thursday.
The 21-year-old, who is participating as the first Iranian woman athlete in the Winter Olympics, hoped to inspire the other Iranian sportswomen to take part in major sporting events.“All female athletes want to compete at the big competitions, I hope more do so,” she said.
“I am very happy to finish the course, because I am the first woman from Iran to compete at a Winter Olympics Games and my mother is watching at home on television,” she said.
“The course was very difficult and I’m very tired, because it’s my first big competition.”
Having led her country at the opening ceremony, Kalhor added that she was inspired by rower Homa Hosseini who carried the Iranian flag at the Beijing Olympics two years ago, according to AFP.
“She spoke to me in Iran and wished me luck,” said Kalhor, who also competed at last year’s World Ski Championships in Val d’Isere where she failed to qualify for the giant slalom and was disqualified from the slalom.
Kalhor’s hero is Austrian skier Kathrin Zettel and the Iranian was delighted to share the Whistler Creekside course with her idol.
“I’m very happy she is in third place after the first run. I hope she wins,” Kalhor said.
German Viktoria Rebensburg, who had never won a major race, clocked a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 27.11 seconds.
Tina Maze of Slovenia came second with a time of 2:27.15 minutes and Elisabeth Goergl of Austria won bronze with 2:27.25 minutes
