President inaugurates Mamlow Dam; $5b for irrigation

TEHRAN -— Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated Mamlow Dam on Jajrood river on Wednesday.

The Mehr News Agency quoted the president as saying $4.8 billion has been set aside by the government for irrigation systems in arable lands in the country in the Iranian calendar year of 1390 (March 2011-March 2012).
The purpose of building the dam is to supply a portion of the drinking water in Tehran as well as irrigation water for the arable lands in Varamin and Pakdasht.
Construction of the dam took 8 years.
Mamlow Dam is located 45 kilometers east of Tehran
