Razvan Lucescu has stepped down as coach of the Romanian national team with immediate effect.
Lucescu met with Romanian Football Federation chief Mircea Sandu following the team's crucial 3-0 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Euro 2012 Group D qualifier on Friday. In a statement, Sandu said they parted and good terms and wished him all the best for the future.
""I wish him success wherever he works next and I hope the next coach and his staff will continue to get the same results as the one Lucescu managed last night,"" said Sandu.
The 42-year-old’s poor record as the Romanian national team coach seems to have contributed to his decision. The former goalkeeper won just seven of the 21 games since taking the job in 2009.
According to the federation's website, the team will now be headed by assistant coach Stefan Iovan and Under-21 boss Emil Sandoi for the upcoming friendly internationals against Brazil and Paraguay until a replacement is found. Romania sit fourth in their Euro 2012 qualifying group and play a double-header in September against Luxembourg and France.
Lucescu previously coached Rapid Bucharest for three years, winning two Romanian Cups and reaching the Uefa Cup quarter-finals. There are reports in Romania suggesting he will return to his former role as coach of Rapid.
