TEHRAN - Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Wednesday that the policy of Hassan Rouhani’s government is based on seeking détente with countries in the Middle East.

Ever since Rouhani took office, he has been after cooperating with countries and promoting peace and stability which would benefit not just Iran and the region but the entire world, Marzieh Afkham said in her weekly press conference.

To achieve regional stability, she added, Iran is willing to hold dialogue with regional countries.

She also said Iran respects the sovereignty of other countries and does not meddle in their affairs.

Elsewhere in her remarks, the Foreign Ministry official said Iran has chosen dialogue to resolve issues with the West and the settlement of the nuclear dispute with the P5+1 group is a living example of it.

She went on to say that sanctions and bullying don’t work against Iran.

The spokeswoman also said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will soon start a second round of his regional tour with the aim of finding political solutions to the crises in regional countries, particularly in Yemen.

He would also seek to cement economic and political cooperation with regional countries, she added.

-----Iran not concerned about Congress rejection of nuclear deal---

When asked about the likelihood of the killing of the nuclear deal by the U.S. Congress, Afkham said it is an opportunity for the international community to respond positively to the deal. However, she said Iran is not concerned about a rejection of the deal by Congress.

On the 19 Iranian nationals held in U.S. jails for alleged violation of sanctions against Iran, Afkham said Iran is following their cases although this has not taken much of the attention of the Western media outlets.
