TEHRAN – Tehran’s Book City Institute plans to organize a two-day meeting on the Persian poet Hafez, which will open on October 13.

A number of scholars and experts on Hafez have been invited to attend the seminar, which will be held a day after Hafez National Day.

“Reza Davari-Ardakani, Bahaeddin Khorramshahi, Maryam Hosseini and Kurosh Kamali Sarvestani are among the experts to review the poetry of Hafez,” the deputy director of the institute, Ali-Asghar Mohammadkhani said in a press release on Friday.

“The second day of the seminar is dedicated to a review of works by Austrian Orientalist Joseph Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall (1774–1856), whose many works include the first ever complete translation of the Divan of Hafez into German,” he added.

Scholars Nader Haqqani, Saeid Firuzabadi, Mohammad-Hadi Varahram and Parvaneh Sohrabi will discuss Joseph von Hammer’s contributions to Oriental studies and Persian literature on the second day.

Although most of Purgstall’s works are now outdated, the Orientalist has played a major role in the development of Western knowledge about the classical civilizations of the Middle East during the Islamic period.
