TEHRAN – On Thursday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned terrorist attack in Libya which claimed the lives of at least 60 people and left about 200 injured.

Iran suggested that what happened in the western Libyan town of Zliten on Thursday was in fact another consequence of “financial and arms support” to terrorists by certain “countries” who use these groups instrumentally to achieve their goals.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always warned about consequences of supporting the terrorist movements,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari said.

“[It is] a policy whose negative consequences and threats can be observed in various countries,” Jaber Ansari noted.

He said the terrorist attack highlights the necessity to end the current crisis in Libya through “national dialogue”.

According to the Associated Press, the massive truck bomb exploded near a police base in Zliten.

The UN special envoy to Libya, Martin Kobler, denounced the attack and urged Libyans to “put their differences aside and unite to confront the scourge of terrorism.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack as well as ongoing attacks by the Islamic State group on oil facilities near Sidra and called for a national unity government as “the best way for Libyans to confront terrorism in all its forms.”
