Details of Action Taken Against Terrorists Who Martyred Iranian Nationals in Pakistan

TEHRAN The Embassy of Pakistan here Sunday elaborated on the details of actions taken by the government of Pakistan against some of the terrorists who martyred a number of Iranian nationals in that country. Talking to the TEHRAN TIMES, the Pakistani Cultural Counsellor, Fazlurrahman Malik, gave the details of the measures his government has taken on Sadiq Banji's case, Iran Cultural Center in Multan, the case of Iranian engineers and that of the Iranian trainees.
The Case of Late Sadiq Ganji Mr. Sadiq Ganji, Director General of the Iranian Cultural Center in Lahore, was assassinated by armed assailants in Lahore, on December 19, 1999. The case was tried by the Special Court, Lahore, which convicted the eight accused. Accused Haq Nawaz was awarded death sentence and the remaining seven were awarded life imprisonment. Two convicts namely Riaz Basra and Javed Ahmad are proclaimed offenders for whose arrest efforts are continuing.
The convicted persons had filed an appeal in the High Court which remains under legal process. On September 1, 1998, the case was entrusted to the new Divisional Bench and was last heard on September 30, 1998. The Advocate General's office is actively following the case. On February 20, 1997, unidentified assailants fired at the Iranian Cultural Center at Multan in which Mr. Muhammad Ali Rahimi, Director of the Center, was martyred along with six Pakistan nationals.
The case was investigated on an emergency basis and as many as 18 persons were found involved in the case. On December 16, 1998, the Special Court, Multan, awarded death sentence to the following accused: Malik Ishaq, Ghulam Rasool Shah Abdul Hanan, Zarar, Imran Ashraf, Muhammad Yousuf, Zubair Khan, and Hafiz Shafiq-ur-Rahman. The above persons have submitted an appeal in the superior court, which is under legal process.
The government of Pakistan is actively following the case, he told the TEHRAN TIMES. The Case of the Iranian Trainees Six Iranians under training in Pakistan while traveling in a van were fired upon near Rawalpindi in which five Iranian nationals along with their Pakistani driver were martyred. The case was investigated on top priority basis and the Special Trial Court announced its judgment in Rawalpindi on April 17, 1998, awarding death sentence to two accused namely Asif and Yaqoob. They went in appeal in the Appellate Tribunal of Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Branch, which maintain the death sentence of accused Asif and acquitted Yaqoob. The State of Pakistan meanwhile filed an appeal against acquittal of another accused, Qari Muhammad Siddique, which was dismissed by Lahore High Court. The government of Pakistan would file an appeal against the above order in the Supreme Court as soon as the judgment in written form of Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Branch is released, Malik added.

Two Iranian engineers, M/S Murtaza Adeebzadeh and Ali Mohammad Habibzadeh, working at Clifton bridge project in Karachi, fell martyr in an attack by assailants armed with automatic weapons. The case was investigated on a priority basis. Two accused namely Khalid Ali alias Tariq and Rashid Hussain Alias Akbar have been convicted and awarded death sentence along with fines of Rs.100,000. Six other accused namely Saeed Kalia, Dildar (alias Dilawar), Naeem, Rizwan, Haider and Imdad have been declared absconders and efforts are continuing for their arrest, the Pakistani diplomat said.
