Cartoon exhibit highlighting odd social behavior opens in Tehran

TEHRAN -- Cartoonist Kambiz Derambakhsh has focused on odd behavior and personal appearances in the Iranian society in his latest collection, which is currently on display in an exhibition at Tehran’s Sareban Gallery.
The patterns for cartoons are completely imaginary and any resemblance to actual people is unintentional and accidental, Derambakhsh said in a note published on the gallery’s website.
“This time, I am focusing on the people around us, people we live with, common people. People we meet in a taxi, on a bus, on the streets, in coffeehouses and at shopping centers,” he added.
The strange faces of the people, their behavior, which is Westernized, their dress and sometimes their obnoxious attitudes should be shown somewhere, he stated.
The collection, which has been entitled “Tableau”, includes 40 works, half of which have been painted on canvas.
Known for his talent to find obscure themes for his creations, Derambakhsh, 67, has worked as a cartoonist, a graphic designer, and an illustrator for over 50 years.
The exhibit runs until June 3 at the gallery located at 8 Mehmandust St., off Shahid Beheshti Ave.
