Iran seeks to increase share of world film market: DEFC director

TEHRAN -- Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC) director Mohammad–Mehdi Tabatabainejad has said that Iran is seeking to increase its share of the world film market by plans to collaborate in productions with other countries.

He made the remarks in a press conference the center held on Sunday to brief the media about the 11th Cinema Verite, Iran’s major international festival for documentary cinema.

“Increasing Iran’s share of the world film market and providing the facilities for more joint film productions will offer a new panorama for the cinema of Iran,” said Tabatabainejad who is also the secretary of the festival.

The new management of the Cinema Organization of Iran has made the policy and sent it to all its satellite institutions, he added.  

Over 60 filmmakers, international festival executives and film distributors have been invited to attend the Cinema Verite festival this year.

The renowned Italian documentarian Gianfranco Rosi, German filmmaker and journalist Andreas Ewels, French critic Matthieu Darras, and program director of the Parisian festival of the Cinema du Reel, Carine Bernasconi, are just a few of the invitees.

Dozens of meetings and workshops are scheduled to be held by a number of the guests.

Tabatabainejad said that the Cinema Verite attaches particular importance to the festival’s international competition, which will screen films acclaimed at major international events.

In addition, the organizers also plan to review films by a number Danish filmmakers in a special section.

In the national section, 124 films will go on screen in different categories.

The festival also plans to unveil a Persian translation of American filmmaker and writer Sheila Curran Bernard’s book “Documentary Storytelling”.

Mostafa Razzaq Karimi and Sa’adatali Saeidpur, documentarians from East Azarbaijan Province, will receive lifetime achievement awards during a special program arranged for filmmakers from the region.

The Documentary and Experimental Film Center is the organizer of the Cinema Verite festival, which will be held at Tehran’s Charsu Cineplex from December 10 to 17.
