MOSCOW A Russian sergeant opened fire on his comrades at a guard station on Saturday, killing two and wounding six before fleeing, state RTR television reported. RTR said police had launched a manhunt for 20-year-old Alexei Skorobogatykh, a conscript sergeant, who opened fire near the guard post he was manning at a magnesium factory in the Ural mountains town of Solikamsk early on Saturday morning.
When other soldiers heard the shooting they rushed into a stream of heavy fire, it said. Shootings and violent incidents are relatively common in Russia's huge military, where conscripts are paid only a few dollars per month and are often ill trained.
