Iran's Parliament Rejects Arak Deputy's Credentials

TEHRAN Majlis deputies disapproved on Sunday the credentials of a conservative figure from Central Arak constituency, Hassan Moradi who was replaced after the election watchdog overturned the results of some boxes cast in the runoff.
Out of a total of 230 MPs who were present during the voting, 87 voted in favor while 108 voted against. The rest abstained.
In the runoff election held in June in Arak, pro-reformist Rahman Kargosha obtained the required number of votes to qualify for a seat in the Sixth Majlis, but the Guardian Council (GC) overturned the results of 31 ballot boxes resulting in another candidate, Hassan Moradi, being declared the winner.
Election irregularities were cited as the cause for the nullification of the votes.
Majlis alleged that the GC annulled the votes of a number of constituencies wherein reformers close to President Mohammad Khatami were declared winners.
In a similar move, the election results of the two western cities of Khoy and Eslamabad Gharb were annulled for unspecified reasons.
The 290-member Sixth Majlis convened on May 26 with reformers taking the majority of the seats.
Majlis has to date approved the credentials of 271 elected candidates.
The credentials of three winners have been decisively annulled.
