SYDNEY Denise Lewis won Britain's first Olympic track and field gold for eight years on Sunday when she took first place in the heptathlon.
Lewis needed to stay with only eight seconds of Russian Yelena Prokhorova in the final event, the 800 meters, to win the title and although she struggled at the end of the race she acquired sufficient points to win by 6,584 to 6,531.
The evening was disrupted by gusting winds and rain which swept through the stadium, affecting the men's high jump and women's triple jump in particular.
Sergei Kliugin upstaged fellow-Russian and world champion Vyacheslav Voronin by winning the high jump with a leap of 2.35 meters and the triple jump went to Bulgarian Tereza Marinova in 15.20 meters.
Szymon Ziolkowski of Poland won the men's hammer with a throw of 80.02 meters.
In the day's opening event Naoko Takahishi won the women's marathon in an Olympic best of two hours 23 minutes 14 seconds. She is the first Japanese woman to win an Olympic title.
