TEHRAN Head of Iran's biggest pro-reform caucus advised Head of Tehran's Justice Department, Abbas-Ali Alizadeh to resign, saying his recent letter to the Judiciary head lacked a vestige of "justice."

"He has transgressed the boundaries of justice and is no more competent for this post, and he would resign if he was fair," Mohammadreza Khatami who heads Islamic Iran Participation Party told IRNA here Monday.

Khatami's remarks come after last Thursday, Tehran's Justice Department hit back at a recent letter by Association of Journalists and warned against some attempts to weaken the Iranian Judiciary.

"The press and mass media should remember that weakening the Judiciary is against the Islamic laws. Thus, they should avoid publishing news which may lead to the weakness or defamation of the country's judicial system," the letter sent to Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi said.

Alizadeh took a swipe at existing reform-minded groups and individuals in the country, saying they were accusing their rivals of being "reactionary".

Mohammadreza Khatami, who is the younger brother of President Mohammad Khatami, castigated Alizadeh for labeling the now-banned pro-reform dailies as "bases for enemies."

Khatami dismissed as "politically-motivated" summons to the Press Court of a pro-reform MP, Ali Shakouri-Rad upon a complaint by the former commander of the Law Enforcement Forces Hedayatollah Lotfian.

He said that the charges leveled against Shakouri-Rad are related to the period before being elected to the Majlis.

Lotfian had states that Shakouri-Rad had accused him of ordering the bloody attack against Tehran University dormitory last July which swept Tehran in six days of riots.

Former police chief, Farhad Nazari was sacked after he was implicated in the worst unrest since the triumph in 1979 of the Islamic Revolution.
