Relatives Arrested Over Honor Killing of Three Girls

ANKARA Four male relatives of three girls who were murdered some time in the past month have been arrested by Turkish gendarmes, newspapers reported Monday. Gendarmes arrested the four in a town near the western Turkish city of Izmit on suspicion of murdering the girls for having brought dishonor on the family by going out with boys, DPA reported. The bodies of Hanim and Turkan Kaya and their cousin Subret Kaya were found last week near another town in the region. The three had been reported missing one month ago. While not common, honor killings are still routinely experienced in rural areas where women are treated as the property of the male members of a family.
