TEHRAN Marveh Kavakci, a former representative of the Virtue Party in the Turkish Parliament, has lodged a complaint against the Turkish government with the European Human Rights Court.

Kavakci was ejected from the Turkish Parliament because she observes hijab (Islamic dress code). The Turkish cabinet also revoked Kavakci's Turkish citizenship, claiming they did this because she also has U.S. citizenship.

According to a report by the Anatolian News Agency, Kavakci lodged her complaint in order to regain her Turkish citizenship and to be reinstated in the Turkish Parliament.

Kavakci was the first Turkish woman who entered Parliament observing hijab. Her presence in the Turkish Parliament led to many disputes. Turkish Muslim women protested against the Parliament's ban on Kavakci's hijab.

Kavakci had previously warned that if the Turkish Judiciary did not restore her Turkish citizenship, she would lodge a complaint at the European Human Rights Court.

According to Turkish law, Turkish nationals have the right to lodge complaints at the European Human Rights Court.
