STOCKHOLM Riots and acts of vandalism during the weekend EU summit in the Swedish city of Gothenburg caused some 11 million euros in material damage, the city's merchants' association estimated Monday.

"It will be several days before we know exact figures. We first have to interview all the shopowners about the losses they suffered," said association Director Lars-Eric Ericsson, quoted by the Swedish news agency TT.

According to AFP, the association's preliminary assessment put the damages at 100 million Swedish kronor (11 million euros, 9.5 million dollars), or two-thirds of the total 150-million-kronor cost of the two-day European Union summit.
