TEHRAN Tehran's City Councilor, Mahmoud Alizadeh Tabatabaei, was jailed in Evin Prison for an eight-month jail term, after the Administrative Court of Tehran found him guilty over the charges of insulting officials and spreading lies to incite public opinion, said the news issued on Monday.

According to the reports, Tabatabaei was found guilty on charge of insulting the former intelligence chief of the National Police Force, Gholam-Reza Naqdi and the Tehran Justice Administration in a case involving former interior minister Abdollah Nouri and former culture minister Ataollah Mohajerani who both figured in a case of physical assault after a weekly Friday prayer gathering three years ago.

Three years ago, on September 5, 1998, some 80 hardline vigilants assaulted Mohajerani and Nouri who were attending a mass funeral held for soldiers killed in 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war and whose remains had been repatriated.

The sentence on Tabatabaie further ordered him to pay a fine of $1,250 in cash.

Naqdi and several of his junior officers were convicted of using force to extract confessions from a group of Tehran district mayors who were then facing graft and corruption charges.
