WASHINGTON -- Andre Agassi scored a quick 6-2, 6-2 win over Fernand Vicente of Spain to coast into the quarterfinals of an 800,000-dollar ATP hardcourt tournament here Thursday.

Agassi, the top seed, will now meet the 12th seeded Briton Greg Rusedki, who defeated seventh seed Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

The 31-year-old seven-time grand slam winner has improved his career record at this tournament to 34-7.

Agassi is trying to turn around his recent struggles following losses to Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia at the tennis masters series event in montreal and to Gaston Gaudio in the first round of last week's masters series in Cincinnati.

In the day's glamour matchup, ninth-seeded Andy Roddick of the United States defeated fifth-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, 6-2, 7-5.

Roddick upset world No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten two weeks ago in Montreal, but fell to Romania's Andrei Pavel in the quarters. In March, he had wins over Marcelo Rios and Pete Sampras, who were both ranked No. 1 in the world, on his way to the Ericsson open quarterfinals, AFP reported.

Last year Roddick used this tournament as the launching pad to his professional career. His next opponent will be Chilean Rios, who upset second-seeded Alex Corretja of Spain, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

The 10th seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands also advanced to the quarterfinals after sixth seed Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States withdrew because of an inflamed right Rotator Cuff.

Fourth seeded Fabrice Santoro of France defeated Paraguay's Ramon Delgado, 6-3, 7-5, Tommy Haas, the third seed, also was a surprise loser to 16th seed Frenchman Jerome Golmard, 6-4, 6-4 and No. 11 Guillermo Canas of Argentina went down to veteran American Michael Chang, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
