EU Disapproves of Referendum in Pakistan

TEHRAN -- The European Union (EU) has expressed its disapproval of a referendum expected to be held in Pakistan today to give President Pervez Musharraf an opportunity to stay in office for another five years, the Pakistani press reported yesterday. The media quoted some EU officials as saying that President Musharraf's move to hold the referendum is illegal and likely to undermine EU-Pakistan relations. The reports said holding the referendum also runs counter to the ideals of the Pakistani people, who expect their president to promote democracy by holding general elections, as he had promised before. Musharraf could not reach an agreement with most political party and religious leaders of his country to stay in power for another term.
