Greene and Montgomery to Clash at U.S. Nationals

RALEIGH, North Carolina -- World record holder Maurice Greene set the stage for his first showdown with American compatriot Tim Montgomery in a year when he said that he would run the 100 meters at next weekend's U.S. National Championships in Palo Alto, California.

The two fastest Americans ever have not met since a hobbling Greene defeated challenger Montgomery for the world title last August in Edmonton, Canada.

"I'll be in the 100," Greene told Reuters in a telephone interview from his home near Los Angeles on Friday.

Earlier, Greene had talked about running the 200 meters in the June 21-23 U.S. championships but the Olympic champion said a 100-meter race would best prepare him for Oslo's opening meeting of the Golden League series on June 28.

Both Greene, whose world record is 9.79 seconds, and Montgomery, who has a lifetime best of 9.84 seconds, hope to go undefeated in the seven-meeting series, making them eligible for its jackpot of 50kg of gold, Reuters reported.

Montgomery shares the year's fastest time of 9.94 seconds with two others but Greene, who clocked 9.97 seconds in Athens last week in his first race since being injured in his world championships victory, promised to be ready to run faster in the U.S. championships. "We're going to give the people here in the United States something to see," Greene said. "They will get a fantastic show."
